Kangana Ranaut's statement about the arrest of Sharmistha Panoli (Social media)
National News: The arrest of young woman and student Sharmistha Panauli by Kolkata Police for sharing an allegedly objectionable video on social media about Prophet Mohammad has created a political and social stir across the country. While the Bengal government is calling this action a step taken to 'prevent communal tension, the BJP and famous Bollywood personalities have termed it as "vote bank politics" and an "attack on freedom of expression."
Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari launched a scathing attack on the Mamata government and said, "Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had once called 'Jai Shri Ram' an abuse and called Maha Kumbh 'Mrityu Kumbh,' and then no action was taken. When Trinamool MP Mahua Moitra called Kali a goddess who eats meat and accepts alcohol, why was there silence then?"
Bollywood actress and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut also came out openly in support of Sharmistha Panauli. She said, "I agree that Sharmistha has used some uncomfortable words in her video, but many youths speak such words on social media these days. This arrest is a direct strangulation of freedom of expression. I urge to Mamata Didi not to make Bengal North Korea."
BJP's IT cell chief and Bengal co-in-charge Amit Malviya said that Sharmistha's video did not spread any violence, nor is there any evidence of communal tension, yet why so much hurry in the arrest? He raised the question, "Is the Mamata government targeting Hindu girls just to please a particular community?"
Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan posted on Twitter citing Trinamool leaders' 'anti-Sanatana Dharma' statements and asked why police action is not taken against them. He wrote, "If Sharmistha can be arrested, then Trinamool leaders should also be held accountable to the same standards." Conclusion The arrest of Sharmistha Panauli is no longer just a legal matter, but it has turned into a debate on serious issues like freedom of expression, religious tolerance, and political appeasement. This case can become a litmus test for Bengal politics in the coming days.
